Fire Safety Tips

Make sure all members in the family or office know what to do in the event of a fire. Draw a floor plan with at least two ways of escaping every room. Make a drawing for each floor. Room sizes do not need to be correct. Make sure the plan shows important details: stairs, hallways and windows that can be used as fire escape routes.

Always inspect windows and door to check whether they open easy enough

Do not use the lift /escalator at the event of fire

Choose a safe open place outside the office / house

EVACUATION PLAN

Practice building evacuating plan as a mock drill. In a real fire situation, the amount of smoke generated by a fire most likely will make it difficult to see.

Stay low to the ground when escaping.

Feel all doors before opening them. If a door is hot, get out another way.

Stop And roll on the ground if clothes catch fire

FAQS

  1. What is the life of a Fire Extinguisher?

The life of an fire extinguisher is as follows as per IS 2190:2010
    1. Water Co2 -10 Yrs
    2. Mechanical Foam- 10 Yrs
    3. Dry Chemical Powder- 10 Yrs
    4. CO2 Type - 15 Yrs
    5. Clean Agent- 10 Yrs
  2. How long is my fire extinguisher good for?

If determining if your fire extinguisher is still operational, you should follow these three steps:
    1. Check the date of manufacture – All fire extinguishers designed for commercial use will have a date of manufacture listed on the label or stamped on the cylinder. Some extinguishers require refurbishing after three/ five years. If your fire extinguishers are older than that (and there hasn’t been a recent inspection by a professional), it’s best to call a professional for inspection or replacement.
    2. Check for annual inspections – Your fire extinguishers should be inspected and checked monthly. On the extinguisher, there should be a tag that indicates when an inspection has been performed by a licensed company each year since the date of manufacture. Designate someone in the office to check the fire extinguishers monthly to make sure that they are easily accessible and that the gauge points in the green.
    3. Check for required internal maintenance – The internal maintenance has to be performed at a certain interval to ensure the integrity of the fire extinguisher. Wet chemical and CO2 fire extinguishers should be hydro tested every five years. Dry chemical and water based fire extinguishers should be hydro tested every 3years.
If you are unsure of any of the above steps, or still are not certain your fire extinguishers are in good working order, contact a fire extinguisher expert to get more information and help you safely dispose of and replace your fire extinguishers.
  3. How often must a fire extinguisher be checked?

At least once a year. Or depends in what industry the fire extinguisher is used or the area where the fire extinguisher is placed
  4. Can I remove or relocate fire equipment or an emergency exit?

Removing or relocating fire equipment or an emergency exit can only be undertaken on condition that the necessary approval has been obtained.
  5. What if the extinguisher pressure gauge is showing too high a pressure? Is this a problem?

If the needle is still within the green section of the gauge it is ok. If however it has crept in to the red then the extinguisher needs attention immediately.
  6. What if my pull pin is bent? Do I have to replace the pin and how?

Yes the pin would need replacing as is could jam in an emergency. It can be replaced by breaking the tamper seal, removing the old pin, inserting a new pin and replacing the tamper seal. This should be performed by a competent person.
  7. What do the band colors on the extinguisher mean?

The band colors mean that 1) Yellow Color Band – Foam type fire extinguishers 2) Red Color Band – Water type fire extinguisher 3) Blue Color Band – Powder type fire extinguishers 4) Black Color Band – Co2 Gas type fire extinguisher 5) Green Color Band – Clean Agent Type Fire extinguisher
  8. What if the extinguisher handle is bent. Do I need to replace the extinguisher?

It would be advisable to have the extinguisher examined by an professional who can, if needed, replace the handle. A bent handle may not look too bad but could hamper the function of the extinguisher.
  9. There is rust on my extinguisher. Does it need replacing?

It would be advisable to have the extinguisher examined by an professional. Over the lifetime of an extinguisher there may appear small signs of corrosion which are in non-critical places on the handle etc. but an professional should examine the extinguisher to determine whether or not the corrosion is acceptable or not.
